Other OpenGov Ideas & Information Resources

Rather than post each of my "OpenGov" Ideas at 27 different websites, I have posted them at the GSA's website (since they are in the forefront of the OpenGov initiative). So, by this notice, the members of the OpenGov Team for your agency have been informed of those ideas. (At least, now, you can't say you were unaware of them.) http://opengsa.ideascale.com/a/pmd/29640-6960 ALSO -- Your OpenGov Team members, ...more »

8a social disadvantage

We are now in the year of 2010. Our present Administration by definition, President, is social disadvantaged. I believe that disadvantaged should include women and other other socially problematic group. I was once a part of the Army Corp small business area. My wife who did maintenance in the private sector was not qualified to continue in the program. We complete over 200 jobs with an excellent rating. We had five children ...more »

Develop an OpenSBA Social Strategy

Disruptive Technologies: A Holistic, Pragmatic Approach New technologies are emerging at a faster pace than Agencies can swallow. The rate of obsolescence outpaces the rate of change. Despite the new technology flood, Agencies lack a strategy to on-board these disruptions. As a result, they often react, flounder, or simply ignore them. We can solve these problems in four major areas of practice: Leadership ...more »

Direct Lending From SBA

The current arrangement where the banks are left to their own internal underwriting decisions, just don't work in the economy we are experiencing. As others have pointed out, the banks make more money in other areas and have a very little incentive to make these loans. I speak from experience. We were working on an SBA Loan for months with Wachovia Bank prior to Wells Fargo taking them over. We went back to different ...more »

SBA Compiled Data of Small Business Contract Awards

The SBA should consider creating an online public access data tool that provides a detailed accounting of contracts let under the auspices of the various programs administered by the SBA. This publicly accessed data should be organized by the race and gender of the firm owners whose firms are awarded contracts under the various small business categories. A compilation of data should be done on the district office level ...more »

Metrics to Measure Agency Success

I recommend a quarterly survey be completed by 8(a) BD Program Participants grading the service received from all District Offices. This survey could be employed to generate pertinent metrics about service at the district office level of the program. To avoid acts of reprisal and uninhibited feedback from participants, I recommend the survey be administered by SBA Headquarters. From here, a district office “report ...more »

Improved SBA Staff Acquisitions and Business Acumen

Since SBA 8(a) staff is engaged to some extent in the acquisitions process, I recommend that the SBA ensures that headquarters staff, regional staff and district office staff involved in affairs related to the 8(a) BD Program develop acquisitions skills consistent with OMB Policy Letter 05-01. Likewise, a desk audit of each person charged with ensuring small business development within SBA District Offices should be ...more »

Freelance web work is going overseas not to US small businesses

Problem: Too many services, particularly web related are being taken by people not even located in this country. This is not allowing for such US small businesses the opportunities they deserve. Background: A small business in web related services expect to start off with small jobs but we are having to compete with places like India for the jobs. This is apparent if one looks at the freelancing web sites. Certainly ...more »

Presumed socially disadvantaged, based upon their ethnicity.

According to the Code of Federal Regulations, those not belonging to a presumed socially disadvantaged group “must establish individual social disadvantage by a preponderance of the evidence” (Business Credit Assistance, 2003). The Code of Federal Regulations further specifies which ethnicities are presumed socially disadvantaged. It is 2010. This 'presumption' needs to be done away with and everyone, EQUALLY, should ...more »

SBA Size Standards Should Consider Regional Differences

The SBA Size Standards for small businesses in California should not be the same as smaller states like North Dakota and others. For example: the State of California Department of General Services (DGS) small business size standards for engineer and surveying firms is $12.5M per year on a 3-year average; whereas US SBA is at $4.5M per year for the same period. This blanket across the board standard for all 50 states ...more »

Report Success Stories

Where are the jobs created by economic stimulus, TARP, and other government programs? We need more of the who, what, when, where. and how. Perhaps the government could take a lesson from business. Let's report case histories that highlight and document successes. Does anyone have success story ideas to share or that need to be "written up?"

Post Metrics on Application Process & Email Individuals

To promote transparency and to help small businesses and the banks that lend to them, SBA ought to make public the steps involved in certifying a business or the various other application processes. They could attach metrics that show how long a typical application spends at each step. An individual could enter their own info (EIN, etc) to see where they are or SBA could email them every time their application is passed ...more »

Increasing Small Business Lending

Banks are scared of examiners, especially in relation to the value of the collateral. They can make more money at less risk, so boards of directors choose the easy way. Just like in the healthcare area, there must be a PUBLIC OPTION! We must go back to the future and revive the SBA direct loan program, increase the limits to that of the 7(a) and 504 and pressure banks to increase lending to eligible small businesses ...more »

Simplify access to start-up business funding

As an average American, I would like to access funding sources directly through the SBA. It would be great to have a simple loan application online through the SBA. This process would be open to individual seeking funding for micro businesses seeking funding of $7000.00 to $15000.00. It would also be great for the process to take no more then 45days.

a better process

We need the SBA to lean on these banks. They are being real slow in loaning money to small buisnes. Furthermore some of these banks, that we loaned a lot of money to are not loanining at all. And I will say that Bank of America is one of them. We need these small buisneses to get going and to to make sure that they prosper. That is where millions of Jobs for Americans will come from.

Banks offering small business loans

Nobel laureate economist Joseph E. Stiglitz says banks these days make very little of their money from lending. Does the SBA have data identifying individual institutions who currently want to loan money to small businesses? There are websites like Kiva.org that connect lenders who want to invest in small businesses to alleviate poverty in poorer countries. A similar idea implemented to connect small businesses with ...more »

Accountability/Transparency for Primes

It would be nice if there was an online system for small businesses to share experiences with working with large companies. A "better business bureau" for partnering of some kind. More transparency would ...more »
